Benefits of 5-Axis Machining

What is 5-Axis Machining?

What are the Advantages of 5-Axis Machining?

5-axis CNC machines have greatly increased the range of possibilities available to us when building precision machined parts. 5 axis machining gives us the ability to quickly produce highly complex machined parts that require extreme accuracy. But first, let’s talk about what CNC (computer numerical control) machining is.

Production machining services

CNC Machining

In its most simple sense, CNC machining involves using computerized controls and cutting tools to remove material from a workpiece (think of a block of steel, aluminum, inconel or titanium, for example). After precisely removing material, the end result is a highly accurate machined part.

CAD/CAM Design

The starting point for any CNC machining project involves creating the CAD design for your part. This can either be done by yourself, or using a company who provides CAD/CAM design services. Understanding CNC machining capabilities and material properties are critical.

Your local machine shop, or machining services provider will mostly likely be able to guide you and provide CAD/CAM services if you need them. Once your CAD design is finalized it will need to be exported or converted into a file format that is compatible with CNC machines. These are commonly IGES or STEP file formats.

5 Axis Machining

5-axis machining allows us to move your part up to five ways around multiple axes. This includes all of the axes of a 4-axis CNC machine with the addition of a rotational 5th axis.

With a 5-axis CNC machine we’re able to machine complex parts in a very cost-effective way. Being able to machine complex, close-tolerance parts makes 5-axis machining ideal for aerospace machining, medical machining, medical device machining, and machining computer parts or components, for example.

Think about precise hard drive components, components for military use, surgical instruments, or MRI scanner systems. 5-axis machining offers high precision, but also high efficiency.

Benefits of 5-Axis Machining

MACHINING EFFICIENCY

With a 5-axis CNC machine we can often machine complex parts with a single setup. Often called “done in one”, fewer setups mean greater efficiency, improved cycle times, higher machining accuracy as well as cost efficiencies.

IMPROVED MACHINING ACCURACY

5-axis CNC machines offer more precise movements than a 3-axis CNC machine. Details and intricate cuts are achieved more quickly and with greater precision.

BETTER SURFACE FINISHES

Thanks to the range of motion 5-axis CNC machines provide, we can use shorter cutting tools. The advantages here are twofold:

  1. Reduced vibration
  2. Higher cutting speeds

The end result is a smoother finish than we can achieve with a 3-axis CNC machine, for example.

Which type of machining is best for your particular needs? At Blanda, we always ask thorough questions to help identify the best machining methods to use based on your part geometry, your budget, and your desired timeline. Whether that means 5-axis machining, 3-axis machining, wire EDM, or high volume machining with a horizontal machining center, we have the knowledge and technology to help with a wide range of precision machining and contract manufacturing needs.
