5-axis CNC machines have greatly increased the range of possibilities available to us when building precision machined parts. 5 axis machining gives us the ability to quickly produce highly complex machined parts that require extreme accuracy. But first, let’s talk about what CNC (computer numerical control) machining is.
In its most simple sense, CNC machining involves using computerized controls and cutting tools to remove material from a workpiece (think of a block of steel, aluminum, inconel or titanium, for example). After precisely removing material, the end result is a highly accurate machined part.
The starting point for any CNC machining project involves creating the CAD design for your part. This can either be done by yourself, or using a company who provides CAD/CAM design services. Understanding CNC machining capabilities and material properties are critical.
Your local machine shop, or machining services provider will mostly likely be able to guide you and provide CAD/CAM services if you need them. Once your CAD design is finalized it will need to be exported or converted into a file format that is compatible with CNC machines. These are commonly IGES or STEP file formats.
5 Axis Machining
5-axis machining allows us to move your part up to five ways around multiple axes. This includes all of the axes of a 4-axis CNC machine with the addition of a rotational 5th axis.
With a 5-axis CNC machine we’re able to machine complex parts in a very cost-effective way. Being able to machine complex, close-tolerance parts makes 5-axis machining ideal for aerospace machining, medical machining, medical device machining, and machining computer parts or components, for example.
